There are a couple of things I am thankful for…my husband, my family, friends, my kids (All 20 of them in my classroom), my cat lovie Charlie-Chuchi, and don’t forget pastelitos de guayaba…
When it comes to the things I am thankful for the list could go on and on! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it’s the time you can just indulge on food to your heart’s content, watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade (While eating lots of pumpkin pie.), and read lots of books over Thanksgiving break since I have Thursday and Friday off!
I have been a book addict since I was 12 years old and when I reflect on the books I am thankful the list could just go on and on and on…so I am going to keep the list as short as I possibly can! Here goes!
1) Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block
This book came into my life when I was 16 years old! It came at a time when I was the typical teenager…full of angst! I felt like an outsider and felt like no one seemed to understand me as a person and when I picked up this book I felt like Francesca Lia Block was speaking to me directly. She made me feel like I was going to be ok! After reading this book I embraced all my weirdness and eccentricities and became more of a whole person after reading this book. This was the book that changed EVERYTHING for me. The words in this book are so beautiful and poetic. You will read it one sitting. And did I mention it’s a magical realism book set in Los Angeles?! This book is forever my number one book.
2) The Sky is Everywhere
The Sky is Everywhere is one of the books that introduced me to YA again and reminded me how YA is the genre for me. This book is soooo poetic, so beautiful, heartbreaking, and it’s just a delight to read. It’s about a girl whose sister dies and she falls in love with two guys and one of the guys used to be her sister’s boyfriend! SCANDAL! I am a sucker for poetic and lyrical language like Francesca Lia Blocks writing. Jandy Nelson’s words will always stand out in my head and I will read anything she writes!
3) Love Letters to the Dead
When I first heard about this book on Buzzfeed it was insta-love for me!! I had to have it and I had to have it now and when I am excited about a book this much it usually means I am going to love it to death! And guess what…I didn’t love it….I worshiped the book! The writing of this book is so heartbreakingly beautiful in every single possible way! How can you not love a book about a girl who writes love letters to the most amazing celebrities who passed like Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, and River FREAKING Phoenix! Everything about this book I heart so much and at the end, I was teary-eyed and hopeful about life and I was just a big fat MESS! I am thankful for this book because each word is so beautifully written and I really appreciate books like these because they are not around a lot in the YA world!
4) I Was a Teenage Fairy
Of course, I need to add another Francesca Lia Block book! It’s just a given! Last time I read this book I was an impressionable teenager and once I read the first sentence I was mesmerized by her language. Since FLB’s books are usually short like this one I recommend that you read it slowly because you can literally get drunk on her words! Her prose is just impeccable! She has a lavish way of describing her surroundings and her characters that it makes you appreciate the beauty of life even in the most mundane things. This book is everything that I love and I am so thankful for the book because it has a cute Tinkerbell-like fairy, it’s set in California, whimsical prose, and it has magical realism! Enough said!
5) Paper Towns by John Green
John Green is my man and is one of the many authors to influence me to pick up YA again and it all started with The Fault in Our Stars but the book that made me a huge fangirl for John Green is Paper Towns! I know there are some people that aren’t huge fans of Paper Towns but I love the characters that he created for this book and I just adore the whole mystery of Margo, I was all about the breaking in of Sea World, the setting of Orlando, and I am a sucker for cat and mouse chase kind of books! The whole book was like a summer road trip that I never wanted to end! I was sad about the ending and I think that this book should turn into a duology so I can feel closure! I would eat it up in a millisecond if it got turned into a duology! I will always ship the connection between Quentin and Margo and I hope for a sequel! I am thankful for John Green to be one of the authors to make me fall in love with YA all over again!
6) Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
Since You’ve Been Gone is also one of those insta-love novels for me as well that I heard about it in Buzzfeed and just had to have it! I remember the book was announced in the spring but I reserved it especially for the summertime and I was so glad that I did! Morgan Matson is my summer queen and her books get me right into the summer mood! This book was the perfect summer read because it reminded me of the summers I had growing up with my best friend who was also very much a “Sloane” kind of character. I am so thankful for Morgan Matson because she always puts me in the right kind of mood to appreciate the sunny side of life more often and all the cool things that life really offers! Also, I am thankful for her Instagram stories! She always looks like she is having the time of her life and I just love her more after that because she seems so cool in person!
7) To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
There are so many times that I passed by this Jenny Han book and if it wasn’t for the book signing of Jenny Han in Books & Books I don’t think I would have ever picked up this book! I am so thankful that I went to meet Jenny Han and learned about the kinds of books that she writes because I fell HEAD OVER HEELS in love with this book series! I am more a stand-alone girl than a book series girl but I have never read a trilogy so fast before! This book caught me by surprise and I have to say I am in love with every single character in this book and don’t let me get started on Peter Kavinsky! But my true favorite character that sucked me into the world is, of course, the MC Lara Jean! Lara Jean is my true spirit animal and my fictional best friend! Also, I love Jenny Han’s Instagram stories as well and I totally adore that Morgan Matson is one of her best friends! Jenny Han seems like such a cool and chill laid back person and I hope to meet her again to tell her how much I ADORE HER and how excited I am for the movie! EEK!
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…
8) The Baby-Sitters Club
I know what your thinking…Baby-Sitters Club? Huh?! What’s that? But if your an 80’s baby that grew up in the early 90’s you will COMPLETELY understand what I am talking about! The Baby-Sitters Club is about a gang of girls that get together and create a Baby-Sitters club business together where they babysit kids around their neighborhood! The book series chronicles the girls’ lives and their babysitting adventures! I am so thankful for this book series because it sparked my passion for reading when I was 12 years old and I became so influenced by this book series that I tortured my parents about creating a Baby-Sitters Club myself! I love the element of true friendship in this book series, girls creating their own business, and living their lives by being the best version of themselves! I will never forget when I started to read Kristy’s Great Idea and how attached I got to these girls throughout the years! These babysitters club girls will always have a special place in my heart and I am thrilled to say the Baby-Sitters Club series is continuing on as graphic novels!
And of course besides all the books that I am thankful for…I am forever thankful for my readers and all the people that have supported me through this blog! Please tell me what books/things/people/animals/anything you’re thankful for!
