Today I felt a bit on the nostalgic side and I was reminiscing about my favorite teenybopper magazines when I was 14 years old and I was shocked to find out that my favorite magazine growing up is no longer in publication!
Bop magazine ended in July 2014 and it broke my teenybopper heart to find out this information so late! I have fond memories in the grocery store with my best friend running through the aisles screaming like a maniac because our latest heartthrob was on the front cover! The magazine covers above of Hanson and JTT were my main squeezes about 19 years ago…sigh…
Back then, Bop magazine was like my US weekly and I was so addicted to the magazine that I was subscribed to Bop publications for a few years! (And I grew out of these magazines when I actually started to take notice of the boys in my own high school!) I remember spending hours upon hours taping up posters to my wall, getting excited to rip out the latest centerfold, and meticulously making these elaborate Hanson photo albums containing almost every article written by the Bop publication!
Also, I used to make photo albums for N’Sync and Backstreet Boys but I would hide them away because I was known as a Hanson girl in high school and back then it was blasphemy if a Hanson girl showed interest in N’Sync and Backstreet Boys! (JC and Nick Carter forever!) Oh, the horror!
These magazines brought back so many fond memories for me because it was a time in my life where things were relatively simple! I didn’t have to worry about bills, work, making time for the gym, counting my dang calories…all those measly mundane things that are part of “adulting” unfortunately. As long as I did my homework and kept my room clean I was golden! At the end of the week, my dad would give me a $10 weekly allowance and usually, I would spend it on a teen magazine and the latest Fear Street paperback in Walden Books in the mall! (Walden Books is no longer in business sadly. RIP Walden Books! If any of you ever went to Walden Books please share!)
This was how I was circa 1998!
I loved my crazy teenybopper days because my whole world revolved around these pretty boys before I even knew what boys were really about! Those dreamy eyes staring back at me every night before I went to bed could do ABSOLUTELY NO WRONG in my heart! I read these magazines before I knew what it meant to have a boyfriend, to fall in love for the first time, and it was before my heart got broken for the first time by a boy. These magazines brought me so much fangirl glee and it was such a great time where I could just live in my own little world of teen fandom. I was able to belt out the latest All-4-One song to a poster of Jonathan Brandis and avoid the big bad world for a few years!
Even though, my fangirl heart belonged to Bop magazine I consumed every teen magazine that was in publication from J-14, Tiger Beat, Teen Beat, and 16! Sadly every magazine except J-14 is no longer in publication! Let’s bow our heads and remember the fall of these teen magazines and the happiness it brought us having all those hunky teen heartthrobs smiling at us while we have the sweetest teen dreams…
